Top 10 Sidekicks

Every now and again, we make mistakes, and many a main character makes one at some point. Some characters have made some wise by investing in a sidekick. Not that any of the sidekicks that appear on this list were literally purchased, but I'm sure you understood what I meant.

In the world of sidekicks, there's not that many good ones. There are some however, that make it to the top of the sidekick ladder and gain a place on my list of the top 10 sidekicks.

1. Chewbacca
Arguably the best sidekick on the list, Chewbacca is a concoction of George Lucas' for his film series 'Star Wars'.
Whilst in the films, 'Chewy' was tearing around space with partner in crime/justice good-old Han Solo. His creator George Lucas, had actually came up with the idea of Chewy in the seat of his car; taking inspiration from his dog sitting upright in the passenger seat.

Chewbacca appears in 4 out of the 6 'Star Wars films.
Chewbacca received a good reception, and quickly became close to fans hearts. I think the question that's always been on our mind though is, 'can Han Solo really understand what Chewy is actually saying?' I guess we'll never know...

2. Hit Girl
Hit Girl (portrayed by Chloƫ Grace Moretz) is a creation of Mike Millar's. Hit girl is very dangerous and quite mad, but is not a fault of her own, as her father 'Big Daddy', raised her in this environment and she doesn't know any different.

After the film kick-ass was released, Hit Girl caused some controversy. The expected reception of Hit Girl was to be negative, but surprisingly received a lot of approval from fans. However, certain lines in the film and violent scenes (played by an 11 year old Chloƫ), caused outrage among some critics.

3. Sam Wise
Sam Wise is the trusty companion of Frodo in Tolkien's novels 'The Lord of The Rings'. Sam Wise was the gardener of the Baggin's, and was sent along on Frodo's quest by Gandalf, as punishment for eavesdropping.

As Frodo became progressively weaker under the weight of the Ring, Sam carried most of the luggage, cooked, kept watch at night whenever he could, and rationed the food so they had enough for the journey. For these reasons, in my mind, Sam has earned a place on this list.

4. Robin
Robin may not be the coolest sidekick of all-time.... well alright, he's not even cool. However, how could I put together a sidekick list and not include Robin?
Robin is the trusty sidekick of Batman, and together are commonly know as; the cape crusaders or the dynamic duo.
Despite the fact that he's not one of my favourite sidekicks (in fact, I personally dislike Robin), he's considered by many to be one of the greatest sidekicks of all-time.

5. Rose Tyler
Rose Tyler (played by Billy Piper) is the assistant of the doctor in the television series 'Doctor Who'. Rose is first introduced as a 19 year old working class shop assistant from London. She then teams-up with the doctor, and remains on our screens for five years.

Her human-perspective on life is at an opposite end to the doctor's alien perspective, but over the series, he becomes fond of her and starts to depend upon her.
Although Rose has been on-screen with two doctors (Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant), I always associate her with David.

6. Dr Watson
Dr. Watson (also known as John H Watson) is the much-loved right-hand man of Sherlock Holmes. Watson is not only an assistant of Holmes, but is also a friend, and the first person Holmes can turn to.

Watson is described as an excellent surgeon and doctor, as-well as being a highly intelligent individual, yet lacking the excellent, unbiased analytical mind of Sherlock. As a pair, they balance each other out quite well.
The character of Dr.Watson has become a lot more popular since the arrival of the Warner Bros Sherlock Holmes films.

7. Ethel Mertz
Ethel Mertz is one of four main characters in the American sitcom Love Lucy. Ethel is a good friend of Lucy (who is one of the other main characters), and together, are normally menacingly scheming. Ethel is the more voice of reason for Lucy, who is hard-wired a bit wilder.

Despite her voice of reason and common-sense outlook on life, she is often intrigued by the mad schemes Lucy comes up with.
Entertainment weekly regards Ethel Mertz as one of the greatest sidekicks of all-time.

8. Kato
Kato is the fictional character of the Green Hornet series, and is played by Jay Chou in the film.
Kato is the masked man who helps Green Hornet, and was portrayed as Bruce Lee during the television series, and it was due to Lee's role as Kato, that in part made martial arts popular in the United States.
The most recent film of the Green Hornet, was the 2011 take, which was directed by Michel Gondry.

9. Tonto
Tonto is the Native American sidekick of the Lone Ranger created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker. Tonto was only created so that the Lone Ranger could have someone to talk to, yet is known as the 'Lone Rangers friend'.
Both Tonto and the Lone Ranger owe their lives to each other, both saving each other on different occasions.

10. Bough
The job of a sidekick is to be there for the main character, the lead singer, the soloist. They're to be reliable, good but not better than their partner. For this particular sidekick however, all of this doesn't apply.
Bough is the sidekick of Johnny English in the film Johnny English. Johnny is always trying to act like the competent agent who knows what he's doing, and bough is the one who actually is competent and knows what he's doing. Together though, they make a great team.
